Firewalla Managed Router
Is your home router actually keeping you safe? I tested the Firewalla Purple to see how easy it is for non-techies to block ads, monitor smart devices, and take back control of their home network privacy. Here is my honest review and a breakdown of which model is right for you.
After reading into Firewalla’s features online and no subscription required, I had to get my hands on a Firewalla to try out. At its core, Firewalla offers a simplified, "managed" router solution. Manage means that you have more freedom to route your traffic compared to 'unmanaged' products that you would normally see at a retail store for the general public. While a tiny bit of technical comfort helps during setup, their help portal is excellent at translating "tech-speak" into plain English if you get stuck.
The Problem with a Typical Home Network Setup
Most "free" routers provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are the digital equivalent of a basic deadbolt. They might stop a casual intruder, but they don't offer much in the way of real-time monitoring or sophisticated defense.
One ISP such as Xfinity, provides an all-in-one-solution that includes a modem 'Gateway', router, Wi-Fi, and basic free to paid tier protection services. Yet, their hardware does not provide a simple security solution for a separate Wi-Fi network, a VLAN, for your home guest. Xfinity support documents states you can "..securely share your private home network with guest via QR code" 😒. That is not a separate network for guests. Xfinity seems to direct those in this scenario to use their XfinityWiFi and Xfinity Mobile Wi-Fi paid service that is broadcasted by Xfinity Gateways by system default.
Does it really matter if guests enter my private network? I trust them
Yes, it does. Guest will share your network details to someone else without your consent. Today, a typical network has lots of devices connected. Think about all the smart devices— Internet of Things (IoT)—on the network. Guest are likely to gain control to these devices. Anyone will be able to play music on your speakers, put videos on your TV, changing your thermostat, access to cameras, file servers, list goes on. If their device contains anything malicious, your network is at risk.
The Firewalla Difference: A Digital Security Guard
When you look at the technical specifications of a router, you’ll often see terms like "managed router." For most non-technical people, that sounds like a job requirement, not a feature.
Here’s the simplified version: Firewalla creates intelligent routers and firewalls.
Think of your standard ISP router like a friendly but inexperienced receptionist. It lets traffic in and out, but it doesn’t question why. Firewalla is the trained security guard. It monitors all traffic coming in and out of your home network, looking for suspicious behavior (like your smart thermostat trying to connect to a known hacker site) and blocking it before it starts.
While you don't need a degree in cybersecurity to set this up, you should feel comfortable navigating a smartphone app. The entire system is controlled via their slick mobile interface, which makes complex security settings feel intuitive.
The Lineup: Which Firewalla is For You?
Firewalla has smartly segmented its products, named simply by colors. I personally chose the Firewalla Purple. I found it to be the perfect intersection of performance (crucial for streaming and remote work) and price, without sacrificing security.
Here’s the thing: all Firewalla devices offer the core security protections. You aren't buying "less" security with the lower-end models; you are buying less capacity or specific advanced hardware features.
Here is a breakdown of the current lineup to help you choose the right guard for your digital door:
Firewalla Tier's
Firewalla offers a few tier's to fit different needs:
| Product Name | Network Speed | Main Feature Focus | MSP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firewalla Orange | 2.5 Gbit | Entry-level / Small Homes + Wi-Fi | No |
| Firewalla Purple SE | 500 Mbit | Affordable Security (No Wi-Fi) | No |
| Firewalla Purple | 1 Gbit | High Performance + Wi-Fi | No |
| Firewalla Gold SE | 1 Gbit | Multi-port (2.5G ports) | Yes |
| Firewalla Gold Plus | 2.5 Gbit | Ultra-fast / Heavy Streaming | Yes |
| Firewalla Gold Pro | 10 Gbit | Enterprise-grade / Power Users | Yes |
Firewalla MSP is a feature for IT professionals managing multiple locations; most home users will not need this. Firewalla Web: https://my.firewalla.net
Firewalla does have a nice help portal that can answer technical questions. I went with Firewalla Purple due to its speed and Wi-Fi ability. They will be shipping Orange pre-orders by starting at the end of March 2026.

Which One Should You By?
- The Apartment Dweller (Orange): The Orange is the newest star of the lineup released in April 2026. It has the latest Wi-Fi 7 technology built-in, making it a perfect all-in-one security box for a standard home or apartment.
- The Traveler (Purple): Because it has short-range Wi-Fi, the Purple is famous for being a "travel router." You can use it in a hotel to create a secure bubble for your laptop and phone. Purple also has an SD card slot for Docker containers. If you expect to connect to or more than eight devices, Orange will be a better option.

- The Smart Home Super-User (Gold SE / Plus): If you have 50+ smart bulbs, cameras, and tablets, you need a "Gold" unit. It doesn't have Wi-Fi built-in because it assumes you are using professional Wi-Fi "Access Points" to cover a large house.
- The Future-Proofer (Gold Pro): If you have the absolute fastest fiber internet available (10 Gbps) and a massive amount of network traffic, this is the heavy hitter for home or small business.
Top "Wins" for the Modern Family
If you install a Firewalla, here are some immediate benefits you’ll notice, even if you never look at a single technical log:
Peace of Mind with Ad Blocking (and Tracker Blocking)
Firewalla can block intrusive web ads and, more importantly, invisible tracking scripts that monitor your activity. This isn’t just about speed—it’s about data privacy for everyone in your home.

Robust, Simple Parental Controls
Instead of paying separate subscriptions for parental control software, Firewalla allows you to create rules per device. You can cut off internet access for consoles at 10 PM, block access to "adult" categories, and even temporarily pause the internet for the whole house when it’s time for dinner.

Create Rules
Firewalla uses the term Rules for network policies. In this area you may define allow or deny rules by IP Address, Domain, Port, Region, Target List managed by Firewalla, and Apps. Below is a sample of the Apps list for creating a rule for. You may also block by domain if you do not locate the application you seek.

Real-Time Alerts
Did your smart doorbell camera just start talking to an unusual server in a different country? Firewalla will alert your phone immediately, letting you block that connection. This is critical for securing "Internet of Things" (IoT) devices, which are notorious for having weak security.

Host your own VPN
Ever wanted to host your own VPN? Connect to your home network while traveling .

Connect to a VPN service
Connect to services you may already be using by reviewing their documentation to see what type of VPN they are using such as: OpenVPN, WireGaurd, or AnyConnect. IPSec will require Firewalla MSP, as mentioned earlier.

Other Network Services
Here, you have the option to enable DNS over HTTPS, NTP services, custom DNS rules, and a RADIUS server for Wi-Fi authentication.

Final Thoughts
Upgrading to a Firewalla isn't just about faster speeds; it’s about control and awareness. It transforms your home network from a vulnerable point of entry into a monitored, secure fortress—all without making you learn to code. Below is a sample of the home screen.

Firewalla not a good fit for:
- Anything larger than a small business or home network use
- Complex networks that requires more freedom and customizations
- Captive Portals requirements to authorize users into certain VLANs. Example: A guest VLAN for users to enter details to join the guest Wi-Fi.
Advance
Firewalla has a neat ability to run Docker Containers! You can run applications within the firewall, such as Pi-Hole a firewall application.
